AntonellisShanghaiBreakthrough

Sometimes Formula 1 reminds us that even when the sport feels predictable, something completely unexpected can happen. The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix was exactly that type of race. It had everything you could want from a Formula 1 race. A teenage winner, Ferrari fighting again, rookies proving themselves.

But the main headline of the entire weekend was very simple. A 19 year old and 3 months old just won a Formula 1 race. That alone tells you how special this race was.

Antonelli’s Arrival

Kimi Antonelli announced himself to the entire Formula 1 world. Starting from pole position, the Mercedes driver had a tricky start when Lewis Hamilton made an incredible move into Turn 1 and passed both Mercedes cars. For a moment it looked like the race might slip away from Antonelli.

You would expect a 19 year old in that situation to panic or push too hard. Antonelli did the opposite. He stayed patient, managed his tyres well, reclaimed the lead later, and from that point he drove like a veteran who had been in Formula 1 for years.

By the time the chequered flag dropped, Antonelli had beaten his own teammate George Russell and secured his first ever Formula 1 victory. This was not a lucky win. It was controlled and composed. And honestly, if this is what Antonelli can do at just 19 years old, I can sense a world drivers champion in him.

Hamilton Finally On Podium

Lewis Hamilton finishing on the podium and getting his 203rd career podium. Not because podiums are rare for him, obviously they are not. But because this one took a long time to come and with Ferrari. This was Hamilton’s first proper Grand Prix podium with Ferrari and it showed exactly why he is still one of the greatest of all time.

The way he attacked at the start, passing both Mercedes cars into Turn 1, was pure Hamilton. It reminded everyone that even after all these years he still has that racing instinct. Throughout the race he looked calm, calculated, and incredibly smooth with tyre management.

Give this man a equal rivalry car and he turns into prime hamilton or fumbles like Yuki Tsunoda. The way he defended, and the way he battled with Leclerc showed the experience of a 7x world champion. Ferrari might still be figuring things out this season, but if Hamilton keeps driving like this, it is only a matter of time before wins start coming.

Leclerc Being Happy At P4

And then there was Charles Leclerc. Normally a P4 finish would frustrate him. He is the type of driver who wants wins and poles.

But this race was different. Leclerc was involved in some of the best battles of the entire race. Wheel to wheel fights with Mercedes, strategic battles with his own teammate Hamilton and ofcourse with his own teams strategist, and constant pressure from behind made his race extremely intense.

By the end of the race, Leclerc crossed the line in fourth place. But surprisingly he actually looked happy in the post race interview. Maybe because he knew he had fought hard for every single lap. The whole race was absolute cinema.

Oliver Bearman Clutched To P5

One performance that people should not overlook is Oliver Bearman. At one point during the race he had a small crash and some contact with Hadjar. Many rookies lose confidence after something like that.

But Bearman pushed. He stayed calm, kept the car under control, and slowly worked his way through the race again. By the end he managed to bring the car home in P5 which is honestly an incredible result considering the difficulties throughout the race.

These are the kinds of drives that really impress people inside the paddock. Performances like that show a driver’s character and his ability.

McLaren and RedBull's Subplot

Current world champion Lando Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri could not even start the race because of serious electrical problems with the McLaren car.

For a team that has recently been fighting for championships, that kind of technical failure is incredibly painful. It shows how brutal F1 can be. Sometimes the car simply does not allow you to fight.

Max Verstappen also had a difficult race and eventually retired because of car problems. Seeing drivers like Verstappen, Norris, and Piastri struggling is totally unusual.

The Big Picture

A 19 year old winning the race. A Ferrari driven by Hamilton returning to the podium. Leclerc fighting aggressively and actually being satisfied with fourth place. A rookie like Bearman finishing fifth after a difficult race.

And at the same time, some of the drivers who usually dominate the headlines were nowhere to be seen. That contrast made the race feel like something bigger than just one weekend.

As I said in my last blog, mercedes did built one hell of a rocketship for their drivers.

Because after watching this race, one thing became very clear. Mercedes ain't gonna stop dominating and I wish Ferrari can give a good fight for the championship.
